SOFTBALL BEGINS GEORGIA STATE TOURNAMENT SATURDAY IN ATLANTA

Jags look to build upon 3-1 start last weekend

INDIANAPOLIS – Coming off a 3-1 weekend in its first weekend of competition, the IUPUI softball team heads down to Atlanta, Ga., to take part in the Georgia State Tournament Feb. 18-19.

The Jaguars open the tournament on Saturday against Tennessee-Chattanooga at 10 a.m., before taking on Eastern Illinois at 2:30 p.m. Then on Sunday, Feb. 19, the Jags square off against tournament host Georgia State at 12:15 p.m., before taking on one of their three opponents again at 2:30 p.m. or 4:45 p.m. depending in seeding.

"We are looking forward to the weekend and we will be facing some tough competition," said head coach Maggie Calcaterra. "We have been practicing and playing well and hope to build on the start we had last weekend."

A week ago, the Jags hit .340 in their four games en route to a 3-1 record picking up wins against Southeast Missouri State, Louisiana-Monroe and SIU-Edwardsville.

Jenny Royse led the team in RBI for the week driving in six, four of which coming on her first career grand slam, en route to hitting .600. Six of IUPUI’s starters managed to hit over .300 for the opening weekend.

On the circle, Jocelyn Oppenhuis kicked off the season with a complete game shutout as IUPUI defeated SEMO, 6-0.

Between Oppenhuis, Nikki Thomas, Samantha Bumbaugh and Emili Escamilla, the Jaguars posted a combined ERA of 1.62 and struck out 28 compared to giving up 13 walks.

The Jags also were impressive on the base paths going a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen bases.

Chattanooga enters the weekend with a 3-2 record, while Georgia State enters the weekend with a 4-2 record. This weekend’s tournament serves as the season-opener for Eastern Illinois.
