INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's golf team turned in a first round 293 as the Jaguars sit in the middle of the five-team field at this week's Butler Fall Invitational, being played at Highland Country Club near the BU campus. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after Monday's (Oct. 8) play was delayed at the start due to frost and cold temperatures. Host Butler leads the field at 281 while Green Bay is second at 288.
IUPUI leads Evansville by two shots and Creighton by four heading into Tuesday's final round.
"We're 12 back, but we keep doing a little bit better," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "We needed to get Santi going, and he played well today.
"I'm starting to figure out who the players are and we're gradually getting better; 293 is okay and we're continuing to get better. The golf is getting better, but if we're going to win, we've got to shoot under par."
Sophomore
Santiago Ruiz is tied for third after firing an even par 70 and freshman
Bryce Very is also among the top 10 after shooting 72 on Monday. The Jaguars' entire starting five was fairly well balanced as junior
Rob van de Vin shot 74 and both
Matt Bruce and
Austin Winings shot 77.
"Rob's getting close," Andrews said. "He looked more comfortable today."
Andrews opted to enter five individuals this week, with sophomore
Cole Adams leading that group on Monday. Adams shot an even par 70 and is tied with Ruiz and Creighton's Johnny Spellerberg for third-place.
Freshman
Jordan Lenard shot 74 and classmate
Jay Holderman shot a 75 in his first collegiate round.
"Jay Holderman wants to be in the conversation for a spot in the lineup," Andrews said. "He played well for it being his first collegiate round."
Butler had the only two players under par in field as Andrew Wegeng shot 66 and Colin Reenan shot 67 on Monday. Play will resume on Tuesday with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
