KETTERING, Ohio - With junior Rob van de Vin leading an otherwise inexperienced IUPUI men's golf team, the Jaguars tied for 11th of 18 schools competing in the UD Fall Invitational at NCR South, concluding on Tuesday (Oct. 23). van de Vin shot a 1-over 143 and earned his first top five finish of the year.

The Netherlands-native had seven birdies during the tournament, tying for fifth among the 100-player field.

"Rob had a good balance going," assistant coach Colby Huffman said. "He was focused on executing a shot every time. He was just taking dead aim.

"He just needs to get his putter going. He had five or six three putts and if those are just two putts, he wins the tournament. He's definitely playing well enough to win tournaments now. If we can get that, the other guys will kind of feed off of him."

Behind van de Vin, freshman Jordan Lenard came in at 12-over 155 (75-80) and sophomore Cole Adams shot 156 (80-76). Freshman Tyler Davis also shot 156 (80-76) and sophomore Santiago Ruiz closed at 163 (82-81).

"The freshmen are coming along," Huffman said. "They're learning, progressing and improving everyday. They need to figure out the balance between the technical mindset and just feeling the shots.

"It's a matter of learning the balance of preparation and working on target oriented golf. But they're right there, it's a year of improvement."

Summit League foe Oakland won the tournament at 578 while IPFW was second at 588. IUPUI shot 610 after identical 305's each day. IUPUI was one shot behind Northern Kentucky and four back of Youngstown State.

Oakland's Nick Cunningham earned medalist honors at 140 and Dayton's John Muir was second at 141.
