MUNCIE, Ind. - Sophomore
Cole Adams narrowly missed a top 10 finish and led IUPUI's 10 entries in this week's Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational played at the par-70 Delaware Country Club. There was no team scoring kept as the tournament consisted of a 47-player field, all playing as individuals.
Indiana's Kyle Perry won the tournament at 2-under 208 (72-69-67) and three others tied for second at 2-over 212. Adams was IUPUI's low man at 218 (72-74-72), good enough for a 12th place finish. It was the second straight tournament the Connersville, Ind.-native was IUPUI's low man after Adams took second-place at the Butler Fall Invitational at Highland Country Club last week.
"Cole played well. He played pretty consistent," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "His game was pretty consistent all day long. Nothing extraordinarily good or nothing extraordinarily bad, but very consistent. His putter is pretty good right now and he's playing with confidence and with his head up.
"You can look just at how he walks and tell how he's playing."
Two shots behind him, junior
Rob van de Vin tied for 13th at 10-over 220 (73-75-72) and
Tyler Davis was tops among the six freshman entrants, firing an 11-over 221 (74-73-74).
Fellow freshman #Jordan Lenard#, who shot an even-par 70 on Monday, closed at 224 (70-75-79) and senior
Matt Bruce shot 227 (77-77-73). Sophomore
Santiago Ruiz closed at 229 (77-75-77) and continued his struggles with the putter.
"Santi and Rob have got to play better," Andrews said. "I'm not going to be happy with Rob until he wins a college golf tournament. With all of his experience, he should be concerned with winning a tournament."
At the bottom of IUPUI's entries, three other freshmen were separated by just two strokes as
Austin Winings shot 232,
Jay Holderman carded 233 and
Bryce Very shot 234. Classmate
Joel Collins capped the field at 266.
"We're gradually getting better. We're still not where we need to be and I'm not going to sugarcoat it, but we're getting better," Andrews said. "The freshman guys are all getting their feet wet and getting experience and battling one another for playing time, which is what I thought we'd have happen. And that isn't a bad thing.
"I don't think I'm going to get any clarity as to who the top guys are all year long. They're fighting each other for playing time and they know it."
IUPUI will cap the fall next week when the Jaguars participate in the Dayton Fall Invitational at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio. The 54-hole tournament is set to be played on Oct. 22-23.
