EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Heading into the 2012 season, head coach
Brandon Currie said one of the strengths of the IUPUI men’s tennis team was its depth and it showed in its season opener Friday evening (Jan. 20) as the bottom of the Jaguars lineup came up with key singles wins helping IUPUI down SIU-Edwardsville, 5-2, at the Edwardsville YMCA.
“It was a great effort tonight. We came out focused ad full of energy at the start and it just was a collective effort at all spots,” said Currie. “Our team chemistry was at a high level and hopefully we can take this momentum into our next match.”
Thomas Gans and #Patrick O’Neill# made their debut for IUPUI at No. 1 doubles and hung with the Cougars top doubles tandem, but Marten Jonsson and Jacob Tanulanond escaped with an 8-5 victory giving SIUE the advantage.
Despite the loss, the Jags bounced back at No. 2 doubles as
Joel Modesitt and
Nick Volz cruised to an 8-1 victory, while newcomer
Armaan Choudhary and
Deon Shafer teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, securing the comeback and the coveted doubles point for IUPUI.
The score was knotted at 1-1 after
Ivan Mojsejev had to retire at No. 2 singles, but the bottom of the lineup carried IUPUI to the season-opening victory.
Chase Emerson, who ended his freshman season with six straight singles victories, picked up right where he left off recording a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, pushing the Jags back in front.
Modesitt followed with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win over Faulkenberg at the No. 4 slot, while Choudhary and Shafer closed out the team win with triumphs at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots by scores of 6-4, 7-6 (1) and 6-1, 6-2, respectively.
Volz took on Jonsson at No. 1 singles and it proved to be the most competitive match of the evening. Volz won the opening set, 6-1, but Jonsson won a tight second set, 6-4, sending the match to a third set. In the final set, it went down to the wire again with Jonsson outlasting Volz, 7-5.
IUPUI turns its attention to Sunday, Jan. 22, when it welcomes a pair of nationally-ranked opponents to Indianapolis. The Jaguars host No. 7 Kentucky at 10 a.m. on Sunday, before meeting up with No. 53 Michigan State at 7 p.m.
At 2 p.m., the Wildcats and Spartans will square off and all three matches will be contested at the University of Indianapolis.
