FORT WAYNE - The IUPUI softball team couldn't figure out IPFW starting pitcher Courtney Cronin, managing just three hits in a 6-0 loss in game one of a three-game series against the Mastodons on Saturday.
The biggest Jaguars threat came in the fifth inning when senior Amy Raker broke up Cronin's no-hit bid with a single to center with two outs. Cronin was able to escape when Kelsey Rupert grounded in to a fielder's choice.
Freshman Julie Love singled in the seventh inning to round out the hits for IUPUI (14-31, 8-13 Summit).
Nikki Thomas started in the circle for IUPUI throwing a complete game, giving up six earned runs while fanning eight. Her eight strikeouts give her 166 on the season. With each strikeout, the freshman increases the single-season strikeout record held previously by Jaguars' junior Samantha Bumbaugh.
IPFW scored two in the first and one each in third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Tomorrow's first game will be broadcast on the web by HCSN radio and live stats will be available on IUPUIjags.com. The doubleheader tomorrow will start at noon and it will conclude IUPUI's season.
