BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Playing its final primer before the upcoming Summit League Tournament, the IUPUI golf team showed well in round one of the adidas Hoosier Invitational at the on-campus IU Championship Course. The Jaguars posted their best single-round score of the spring with an opening round 286 and are tied for fifth among 15 schools after 18 holes.

Saturday's play began at 8:30 a.m., but was halted shortly thereafter due to thunderstorms. After a lengthy delay, play resumed around 2:30 p.m. and was followed by the start of the second round. Round two's conclusion will begin at 8:15 a.m. on Sunday and will be followed by the third and final round.

Indiana earned the top two spots, firing a 279 and a 281 from its 'B' team. Horizon League foes Butler and Cleveland State are tied for third at 284 while IUPUI is tied with George Washington at 286.

"Coming in, I thought we were the fourth or fifth best team here," IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews said. "Obviously, Butler and Cleveland State both had one guy tear it up today. I think if we can get in the red, we can be in striking distance."

Junior Michael Powell was IUPUI's low man after a first round 69 (-2), matching his lowest round of the season. Powell is tied for seventh among the 78-player field after completing his round with four birdies.

"He's starting to play a little better," Andrews said. "He looked good today."

Behind him, senior Ben Moster posted an even par 71 after sitting out last week's tournament in Columbia, Mo..

"Today, (Ben) Moster was walking tall and was confident," Andrews said. "That's the Ben Moster I know. Even if he hit it bad, he kept his head up."

Moster attributed today's success to extended work in practice.

"I really just had more confidence because I got some good practice time in with the week off," the captain said. "All my wedges were working well, from 100 (yards) in and even chipping and putting.

"Even when I missed, there were good misses today. I left myself a lot of easy up and downs."

The trio of Michael Davan, Ben Engle and Jose Pablo Segurola all closed at 73 and are tied for 29th place.

Cleveland State's Kent Monas leads the field after an opening round 66 and Butler's Ryan Wengeng is second at 67.
