INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI softball team dropped a pair of games at home against Purdue 11-1 (5 inn.) and 18-5 (5 inn.) on Wednesday afternoon.
Game One - Box Score
Freshman Nikki Thomas held a solid Purdue lineup scoreless for the first 2.2 innings.
Things came unglued after that point for IUPUI. Rains singled and stole second. Garst homered to make the game 2-0.
The Boilermakers added five more in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
IUPUI (10-23) put its only run on the board in the fifth. Lauren Cooper crushed a double to the right-center field gap. Joy Perry followed that up with a single plating Cooper.
Purdue's starting pitcher Suzie Rzegocki picked up the win giving up just two hits over four innings while striking out seven.
Game Two - Box Score
Things started off ugly for IUPUI in an 18-5 loss.
Purdue (23-8) put up six runs in the first. Only three of those runs were earned against IUPUI starting pitcher Alicia Brewer.
The Boilermakers scored four in the second and added two more in the third to take a 12-0 lead.
IUPUI put up four runs in the third to cut the Purdue lead to eight.
Thomas singled and Chelsie Hale reached on an error. The pair advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Thomas scored on an infield single by Leah Prewitt who had two hits in the game. Hale came around to score when the third baseman fired the ball away.
After a walk to Cherrod Gwaltney, Julie Love kept the rally going with a single to center which plated Prewitt. Love's single went under the centerfielder's legs allowing Gwaltney to score.
Purdue answered right back with five more in the next half inning.
IUPUI's final run came when Gwaltney's double plated Lindsey Richards.
IUPUI will return to action next Tuesday against Indiana State.
