JAGUARS TO TAKE ON UMKC THIS WEEKEND

4/28/2011 9:58:26 AM

INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI is set to play a three-game series against Summit League foe UMKC this weekend. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at noon with the series finale scheduled for Sunday at noon.

The Jaguars had two doubleheaders scheduled against Southern Illinois and Eastern Illinois this week, but mother nature has washed out all four games.

IUPUI (13-28, 8-10 Summit) lost two of three games at Southern Utah last weekend. Nikki Thomas' gem in game one led the Jaguars to a 2-1 defeat of the Thunderbirds.

However, IUPUI missed golden opportunities to take games two and three of the series. The Jaguars led 11-1 during game two and fell 13-12 after giving up five runs in the five runs in the sixth inning. The comeback bug bit the Jaguars in game two as the Thunderbirds rallied from a 6-2 deficit with 11 unanswered runs to pull off the doubleheader sweep.

Julie Love led the Jaguars offensive attack hitting .583 (7-for-12) for the week. The Jaguars have 34 home runs thus far and are three short of last year's team record of 37.

Alicia Brewer leads the team in average (.304), home runs (8) and  RBI (27). She also leads the league with 7 home runs during Summit League play.

Nikki Thomas' four strikeouts in game one of Saturday's doubleheader gave her IUPUI's single-season strikeout record. Her total of 145 strikeouts tops Samantha Bumbaugh's previous record of 140 set in 2010.

UMKC (30-14, 14-3 Summit)

The Kangaroos come in to Indianapolis red hot. They are winners of seven straight and have won their last 11 league games. UMKC swept Oakland in a three-game series last weekend.

Offense

UMKC has a very balanced attack. Emily Ott (29), Anna Sokolik (28), Megan Ussary (28) and Katie Henning (23) lead the team in RBI. Kaelene Curry's .388 batting average and 38 runs scored lead the charge at the top of the lineup.

Danielle Bennefeld has a team-high five home runs. The Kangaroos have ran all over teams. They have stolen 114 bases in 135 attempts. Kelly Fischer leads the team with 19 steals while Ott (16), Curry (15), Ussary (15), Sokolik (13) and Ashley Whiteside (12) all have over 10 steals each.

Pitching

Deanna Friese has been the workhouse for the Kangaroos. She has started 26 of 33 games and has a 21-7 record. Friese has missed a lot of bats fanning 233 in 186.2 innings. Her ERA is a sparkling 1.84.
