BREWER, PREWITT HELP POWER JAGUARS PAST JACKRABBITS

4/16/2011 7:56:11 PM

INDIANAPOLIS - Alicia Brewer and Leah Prewitt each blasted two home runs in a 14-6 five-inning game five win. Nikki Thomas gem in the circle helped the Jaguars salvage a 5-0 win over South Dakota State in game two on Saturday.

Game One - Box Score

Two homeruns each by Brewer and Prewitt in game one helped the Jaguars put a halt to the team's 10-game losing streak with a 14-6 five-inning win on Saturday.

Brewer's grand slam ended the game in the fifth inning.

IUPUI got things started early. Hannah Croucher led off the first with a triple.  Two batters later Chelsie Hale's single drove her home. Leah Prewitt crushed a two-run bomb to left field giving the Jaguars a three-run cushion. Jessica Lam hit a ball to the first baseman and, as she tried to tag Lam, the ball fell out of her glove and Angela Bartucci came around to score to cap a four-run first inning.

A two-run home run in the second inning by Krista Honken cut the Jaguar lead in half.

If the Jackrabbits scored, IUPUI (12-25, 7-7 Summit) usually had an answer. Hale measured up a Seidlitz delivery and drove it off the wall in left-center field driving home Croucher, who walked and stole second to lead off the inning. Prewitt crushed her second home run of the game to give the Jaguars a 7-2 lead.

Ashley Durazo's solo shot in the top of the third cut the IUPUI lead to 7-3.

The Jaguars kept pouring on the offense in their half of the third. Croucher doubled with two outs and reached third on a wild pitch. Kelsey Rupert hit a shot up the middle to make the game 8-3.

Allison Huffman's three-run home run cut the lead to two runs.

After that Alicia Brewer took matters in to her own hands. The freshman blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning to give IUPUI some breathing room.

In the fifth inning, Raker, Prewitt and Hale were all hit by pitches setting the stage for Brewer. She drove a pitch over the right field wall for a game-ending grand slam.

Nicole Natter (3-3) got the win in relief of Samantha Bumbaugh. Natter pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Croucher and Hale each had two hits for the game.

Game Two - Box Score

Thomas' 13 strikeout, complete-game performance led IUPUI to a 5-0 win in game two. She mixed her pitches beautifully leaving several South Dakota State hitters handcuffed with her offspeed pitches.

Jessica Lam got IUPUI's offense rolling with an RBI single in the second inning giving the Jaguars a 1-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Nikki Thomas was wild but was able to pitch herself out of trouble. After a walk and a hit in the second, Thomas fanned Devon Reick to end the inning

The offense rewarded her effort in the next half inning. Hale singled and Prewitt walked. After Brewer fanned, Angela Bartucci delivered with a two-run triple over the rightfielder's head. Bartucci scored when the Jackrabbits' first baseman booted a ground ball.

IUPUI added another run in the fourth. Thomas walked to start the inning and was forced on Croucher's fielder's choice. Pinch hitter Gwaltney grounded out to first allowing Croucher to reach second. Hale hit a grounder to the pitcher who threw the ball away allowing Croucher to score.

Thomas did the rest for the Jaguars. With runners on second and third in the sixth inning the Southport native fanned two straight Jackrabbits (8-32, 5-9 Summit) to escape the inning unscathed.

IUPUI will go for the sweep tomorrow (Sunday) at noon.
