SYCAMORES TOO MUCH FOR JAGUARS

4/13/2011 8:28:07 PM

TERRE HAUTE - The IUPUI softball team's losing streak extended to ten games after losing to Indiana State 7-2 in game one and 1-0 in game two at Price Field on Wednesday.

Game One - Box Score

A six-run first inning was enough to do in the Jaguars (10-25) in game one. Freshman Nikki Thomas struggled and didn't retire a batter giving up four earned runs on two hits while walking two batters and hitting another.

A double by Alyssa Marcum drove in two runs and knocked Thomas out of the game.

Head coach Maggie Calcaterra went with Nicole Natter who limited the damage giving up just one earned run in six innings of work.

The Jaguars got on the board when Leah Prewitt hit her first home run of the season in the second inning. IUPUI scored its only other run in the seventh inning on a double by Cherrod Gwaltney which plated Brandi Lawson, who was hit by a pitch.

Prewitt was the only Jaguar with two hits. Lindsey Richards, Alicia Brewer and Jessica Lam had the other three IUPUI hits.

Game Two - Box Score

IUPUI fell just short in a 1-0 pitcher's duel in game two. Samantha Bumbaugh was sharp for the Jaguars throwing a complete game, giving up just one run on three hits while fanning three Sycamores (14-19).

The junior's only blemish came in the third inning when she gave up a single to Shelby Wilson and a triple to Stephanie Robinson plating the only run of the game.

IUPUI was stifled by Sycamores starting pitcher Kristen Felker who gave up two hits while striking out five Jaguars.

A double by Angela Bartucci in the fourth and a single by Brewer in the sixth accounted for the only two IUPUI hits. The Jaguars never had a runner reach third base.

IUPUI will resume Summit League play at 3 p.m. Saturday with a doubleheader against South Dakota State. The teams are scheduled for a three-game series with the last game coming on Sunday.
