JAGUARS LEAD IN BOTH GAMES BUT DROP DOUBLEHEADER AT CLEVELAND STATE

3/29/2011 8:19:21 PM

CLEVELAND - IUPUI was unable capture a win during their trip to Cleveland. The Jaguars held 2-0 leads late in each game but fell to Cleveland State 4-2 in game one and 11-5 in game two.

Game One - (Box Score)

Freshman Nikki Thomas looked to be in control in the circle. She gave up just one hit in the first four innings of work in a scoreless affair.

Up to that point in the game, the IUPUI offense gave Thomas no run support. They finally got to Vikings' hurler Tess Sito in the top of the fifth. Jessica Lam singled with one out. After Thomas reached on a fielder's choice,

Hannah Croucher walked. Angela Bartucci delivered a big two-out double plating both Thomas and Croucher.

Thomas lost command of the strike zone in the bottom half of the inning helping Cleveland State answer back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. She hit the first batter of the inning, struck out the next, then proceeded to walk two of the next three hitters with a hit batsmen sandwiched in between.

Thomas was lifted in favor of Nicole Natter who inherited the bases loaded and one out. Natter gave up a double to Toman which gave the Vikings a 3-2 lead.  Powell followed with a double plating Toman and extending the Cleveland State lead to 4-2.

The Jaguars went in order in their final two chances.

Amy Raker and Alicia Brewer each had hits for IUPUI (10-18).

Game Two - (Box Score)

Junior Samantha Bumbaugh was cruising until the fifth inning when Cleveland State put up six runs to go ahead of IUPUI for good.

After Bumbaugh fanned the lead-off hitter in the inning, Nagy doubled and Sheppard walked. A single and an error gave the Vikings their first run of the game. Bumbaugh hit the next batter to load the bases and Sito followed that with a bases-clearing double. The Vikings added two more unearned runs.

IUPUI got their scoring started when Lam hit an opposite-field home run in the third inning. Croucher drove in Julie Love, who singled to lead off the fifth, to give IUPUI a 2-0 lead.

IUPUI got within one but never regained the lead. Love's second hit of the game knocked Chelsie Hale in, who walked to lead off the sixth inning. The Jaguars added two more runs to cut the lead to 6-5

A resilient Cleveland State team scored five in the bottom half of the inning to put the Jaguars away.

IUPUI will return to action on Friday against North Dakota State on Friday.
