AVON, Ind. - The IUPUI men's golf team posted a final round 298 and climbed to a second-place finish as play concluded at the Butler Spring Invitational at Prestwick Golf Club on Tuesday. Purdue won the tournament at 578 including a final round 290, despite playing four-count-four format. IUPUI finished at 598 and tied for second with Loyola (Ill.). Dayton and SIU-Edwardsville tied for fourth at 601.

Purdue, which came in ranked No. 47 nationally by Golfstat, held a 12-shot lead over the Jaguars heading into Tuesday's second round.

"They weren't going to give it back to us," IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews said. "I'm not upset, but the guys can play better. They can do much better. But, the four horsemen called me in afterwards and asked me what they can do to get better. That's the attitude of this team."

Junior Michael Davan was the low man among the lineup, tying for fifth among the 80-player field at 146 (72-74). Davan had eight birdies as IUPUI placed second among the field with 29 as a team.

"Davan played really well, aside from one bad hole," Andrews said. "Aside from the quad he had on Monday, he had a really good tournament."

Juniors Ben Engle and Michael Powell both finished at 150, tying for 17th overall. Powell followed Monday's 77 with a 73 while Engle went 73-77. Senior Ben Moster ended up at 156 (78-78) and freshman Juan Diego Plasencia rebounded from a poor showing on Monday with a final round 74.

"Juan D. had it going, but again he didn't finish well. He was two-under and just let it get away," Andrews said. "He's a freshman and he'll learn how to hang on to two-under, or better yet, move to four or five under. The kids have to learn from this.

"They're all good and they're close to knocking the door down. All their golf games looked pretty good."

Fellow freshman Jose Pablo Segurola tied for 26th while playing as an individual, closing at 152 (77-75).

Despite the second-place finish, Andrews is hoping a tourney win is in the near future.

"This was our third tournament of the fall and probably the first where we didn't expect to win it," Andrews said. "That's the expectation nearly everytime out. We were No. 91 in the computer at the end of the fall and now we're 141. We've dropped 50 spots this spring.

"More than anything, that narrows our focus to winning the conference championship."

The Jaguars will return to action on Apr. 4-5 when they take part in the Mizzou Intercollegiate against an incredibly tough field.

"It's a good field," Andrews said. "Two years ago, we played really well there. There's going to be some Big 12 teams there and a couple Big Ten teams there. We look forward to it and I think we need it."

The tournament will take place at Old Hawthorne Country Club.
