KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Coming off a win in its Summit League opener over Oral Roberts, the IUPUI men’s tennis team looked to jump out to a 2-0 league start with a win at UMKC on Saturday, but the Jaguars came up short in some tight matches and lost to the preseason conference favorite, 7-0, Saturday evening.

 

UMKC improved to 2-0 in Summit League play, while IUPUI fell to 1-1.

 

All three doubles matches were tightly contested as both teams looked to jump out to the early one-point lead.

 

UMKC’s top doubles tandem got the Kangaroos off to a good start winning their doubles match by an 8-5 margin over Joe Hammond and Bren Vasalakis, but Ivan Mojsejev and Dan Klingenberg got the Jags back on track with a tiebreaker win at the No. 3 doubles slot.

 

Nick Volz and Joel Modesitt found themselves in a tight match with UMKC’s No. 2 doubles team in the decisive doubles match. The see-saw battle went to a tiebreaker and unfortunately for the Jaguars, UMKC squeaked out an 8-6 win in the tiebreaker that secured the doubles point for the ‘Roos.

 

In singles action, Mojsejev, Volz, Modesitt, and Taylor Tunis each were competitive but ultimately dropped straight-set decisions.

 

Klingenberg and Chase Emerson jumped out to first-set wins winning 7-6 and 6-0, respectively, but could not hold on for wins with each of their opponents overcoming first-set defeats to capture come-from-behind victories completing the 7-0 UMKC win.

 

The Jags have a day off before concluding their first weekend of league play against South Dakota State in Macomb, Ill.
