Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI softball team clawed its way to its second straight series victory with a 7-1 win over Oakland on Saturday afternoon.

The Jaguars broke through in the second inning. Amy Raker walked to start the inning. Cooper pinch ran for Raker and made it to second on a pickoff attempt which hit off the first baseman's glove and went down the right field line.

Freshman Angela Bartucci then reached on an error by the third baseman, putting runners on the corners. The two baserunners executed a double steal to get the Jaguars on the board. Freshman Jessica Lam later crushed a double to give IUPUI a 2-0 lead.

Raker started in the circle for the Jaguars (9-12, 4-2 Summit) and gave up just one unearned run in 2.1 innings of work. Despite the fact that Raker left with the lead, she did not pitch the required four innings to pick up the win.

Oakland's only run came in the third when catcher Julie Love fired to second base to try to catch Krych stealing at second, but no one covered the bag. The throw went sailing in to center field allowing Krych to wheel all the way home.

IUPUI opened up the game in the third inning. Nikki Thomas was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off and was sacrificed to second by Chelsie Hale. Raker followed with an RBI-single and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder.

After freshman Brandi Lawson struck out, Alicia Brewer tripled to score Raker. Bartucci hit an infield single to plate Brewer and freshman Love delivered a two-run bomb to cap off the five-run third inning.

Thomas (4-5) relieved Raker in the third inning. She was wild at times, but was able to fight her away out of innings. The Southport native gave up no runs and struck out six in 4.1 innings pitched.  Her efforts were enough to pick up the win.

The Golden Grizzlies (5-14, 1-4 Summit) left ten runners on base.

The Jaguars will return to action with a home doubleheader on Tuesday against Valparaiso, scheduled to begin at 4 pm.
