CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- IUPUI finished its weekend at the Frost Classic with a 7-1 loss against Northern Iowa at Warner Park on Sunday afternoon.
The team's only run came when Chelsie Hale streaked home when Northern Iowa attempted to throw out Jessica Lam stealing.
IUPUI (4-9) couldn't get anything going offensively against Panthers' pitcher Jamie Fisher. She struck the first five Jaguars out. IUPUI managed just four singles. Jessica Lam singled in the third and seventh, Alicia Brewer hit a bullet up the middle in the sixth and Hale singled to left to begin the seventh.
Brewer's single started a rally in the sixth. Hannah Croucher and Leah Prewitt walked to load the bases, but Fisher got Julie Love to pop out to end the inning.
Freshman Nikki Thomas started for the Jaguars. She lived dangerously for the first two innings.
After hitting two consecutive batters in the first inning, she gave up a rocket single that hit her leg.
She proved to be alright during the next at bat. Thomas (1-4) blew a fastball by Courtney Dunker for the second out and got Livi Abney to hit a lazy fly ball to Croucher in left.
In the second, Thomas walked two hitters. But, the Southport native responded with three strikeouts.
While she wiggled out of trouble in the first two innings, she was unable to escape the third unscathed.
She walked in a run and the second Panther run came on a wild pitch to the next hitter. The freshman escaped further damage by getting Hannah Borschel to ground back to the mound.
Brewer, relieved Thomas in the fourth and gave up a home run to Abney to make the game 3-0.
Rachel Gerking's squeeze bunt knocked in Northern Iowa's fourth run of the game and a two-run home run by Courtney Dunker put the Panthers up six. Abney followed Dunker with her second home run of the game putting Northern Iowa up seven.
Nicole Natter pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
IUPUI will travel to Morehead, Ky. for a tournament next weekend.
