MUNCIE, Ind. – In its first of two weekend matches against Mid-American Conference opponents, the IUPUI men's tennis team traveled to Muncie, Ind., and fell to Ball State, 6-1, Friday evening.

Coming into the week, the duo of Nick Volz, who was named Summit League Player of the Week on Feb. 9, and Joel Modesitt had won four consecutive doubles matches, but that streak was halted Friday evening.

Joe Hammond and Bren Vasalakis fell, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles to get things started, before Volz and Modesitt got into a see-saw match-up with Ball State's Dalton Albertin and Alex Brym in No. 2 doubles. Despite a valiant effort, Volz and Modesitt came up short in a tiebreaker losing, 9-8 (10-5).

With the loss in No. 2 doubles, the Cardinals had secured the doubles point with the No. 3 doubles match still to finish. Dan Klingenberg and Chase Emerson teamed up for IUPUI at the No. 3 doubles spot, but the duo was on the wrong side of an 8-6 decision.

At the top of the lineup, the Cardinals took straight set victories at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 positions, before Modesitt picked up the Jags lone point of the evening.

Modesitt found himself in an early hole after dropping the first set, 6-3, but rebounded quickly with a convincing 6-2 second-set triumph. With Ball State already owning the victory, Modesitt's match went into a third set, where he used a break to defeat Zane Smith, 6-4, to register the three-set win.

At No. 5 singles, Emerson got out of the gates strong with a 6-3 opening set win, but could not hold on as Austin Smith responded with wins of 6-0 and 6-1 in the second and third sets, respectively, to hold off Emerson.

At No. 6 singles, Vasalakis closed out the day with a straight sets loss and Ball State completed the 6-1 triumph.

IUPUI returns to the court on Sunday, Feb. 13, when it hosts Toledo. The match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
