ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - A bad 45 minute stretch saw the Jaguars stumble down the leaderboard at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate on Sunday as IUPUI placed tenth at the 15-team event. The Jaguars closed with a team score of 893 (294-300-299) at the annual tournament hosted by Indiana University. Illinois cruised to the team title with a score of 859 while Central Florida's Connor Arendell took medalist honors with a 208 (-5) 54-hole score.

"I'm a little disappointed in how we performed, simply because I think we're better than that," IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews said. "We're 12 rounds in counting yesterday and the qualifier and we can't have guys shooting their highest scores of the year at this point.

"However, I'm really glad that we played against really good competition to start the year. And not a single one of my guys played college golf at all last year, but I have higher expectations for them."

Junior college-transfer Michael Davan led the way as the Illinois-native closed the tournament at 221 (70-76-75), tying for 15th among the 81 player field.

"(Davan) was a really good player in junior college and he's still a really good player," Andrews said. "His experience carried him through some rough patches, but he's still got to gain some experience down the road. He's a very aggressive player and I love that he plays with a lot of aggression. He'll continue to progress the more he plays."

Both Michael Powell and Juan Diego Plasencia tied for 32nd overall at 225. Plasencia turned in a 72 on Sunday while Powell notched a 73.

"Juan D. played really good," Andrews said. "He came out firing and ready to go. He wasn't really phased by any of it. He just went out and played the golf course."

Junior Ben Engle finished at 228 to tie for 47th while senior Ben Moster was 79th at 243.

"There was a 45 minute span that really hurt us," Andrews said. "Engle went from one over to eight over and Moster went from two over to eight over. I know they both redshirted last year and are having to knock some of the rust off, especially in the 36 holers though.

"I see this team though and I can't help but think that they're going to be really good."

IUPUI will next hit the links on Saturday, Sept. 18 when it takes part in The McLaughlin at the Bethpage Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.. The event will be hosted by St. John's University.
