MOREHEAD, Ky. - Coming off its first bye weekend in over a month, the IUPUI softball team came out a little sluggish in its final non-conference action of the season at Morehead State on Wednesday. The host Eagles won game one easily, 7-1, and completed the sweep with an 8-4 game two victory.
Sophomore first baseman
Leah Prewitt highlighted the Jaguars' day, going 3-for-4 with three RBI in the game two defeat.
Morhead State (27-19) built a 1-0 lead against IUPUI starter
Samantha Bumbaugh in the bottom of the first before doing heavy damage with a four-run third. Kayla Brill and Rebecca Butler both deposited two-run homers in the inning, pushing MSU's lead out to 5-0. The hosts led 7-0 before the Jaguars finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning.
Junior
Chelsie Hale led off the frame with IUPUI's first triple of the year, but was cut down one batter later at the plate when trying to score on
Laura Wilcox's fly out to right. However, rookie
Sydney Miller refused to let the Jags be shutout when she drilled her second homer of the season over the centerfield fence.
IUPUI had just five hits against a pair of MSU pitchers. Alex Gjevre (14-9) got the win, tossing six innings and striking out nine. Elizabeth Wagner slammed the door, yielding Miller's homer and fanning two in the seventh. Bumbaugh (4-15) was unable to get out of the third inning in the loss. Junior
Amy Raker came on in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) in 3.2 innings work.
In game two, IUPUI (13-34) had an early 2-0 lead before being bitten by the four-run third again. The Jaguars scored a run in the top of the first when Miller reached on a fielder's choice and wheeled all the way home when Prewitt doubled to center. MSU centerfielder Courtney Seiler lost the ball in the sun, leading to the game's first run.
In the third, Wilcox led off with an infield hit, moved to second on
Kelsey Rupert's team-high sixth sacrifice bunt of the year, and later scored on Prewitt's single to left.
However, the hosts took advantage of two IUPUI errors to take a 4-2 lead, scoring four unearned runs against starter
Nicole Natter.
IUPUI cut a run off the lead in the fourth when Rupert singled home Hale, but MSU scored twice in the fourth and sixth innings to give starter Sarah Funston more than enough breathing room. Funston (12-9) fanned two and walked three in four innings work before handing the ball over to Ashley Boyd to start the fifth. Boyd worked the final three innings to record her first save of the year.
Natter (5-11) was the tough luck loser, allowing four unearned runs. Raker gave up the final four runs, tossing 3.1 innings.
Prewitt provided half of the Jaguars' six hits in the loss.
The Jaguars will now return home for its final three-game series of the season, beginning with a 4:00 p.m. Summit League doubleheader against IPFW on Friday night. IUPUI will also honor seniors Wilcox,
Mia Ettl and
Alicia Hayes as they play their final home games this weekend.
