INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI softball team's offense caught fire on Thursday as the Jaguars swept a doubleheader from the Dayton Flyers. IUPUI won game one in walkoff fashion 7-6 before trouncing the visitors 14-1 in the nightcap. The Jaguars' 14 runs in game two established a new single-game record at the Division I level.

IUPUI banged out 25 hits in the two games including tying its season-high with 14 in game two.

IUPUI (13-32) yielded three runs in both the top of the fifth and sixth innings of the opener to squander an early 2-0 advantage. However, the Jags showed some resiliency, plating the game-tying run in the sixth and the game-winner in the seventh.

Trailing 6-5 in the sixth, freshman Joy Perry led off with an infield hit, but was erased on Kelsey Rupert's fielder's choice to third. Rupert moved to second on a wild pitch and Dayton chose to intentionally walk Leah Prewitt with two outs. Junior Amy Raker made the move backfire though, drilling a double to right-center to knot the game at 6-6.

IUPUI starter Samantha Bumbaugh hung a zero in the top of the seventh and the offense made her a winner in the bottom half. Freshman Sydney Miller lined a one-out double to the fence in left and moved to third when UD's second baseman misplayed a Mia Ettl ground ball. Ettl stole second and Dayton pitched around Perry with a base open. The lefty eventually worked a walk, loading the bases for the Rupert. The Jasper, Ind.-native responded with a single off the drawn in first baseman, allowing Miller to trot home with the decisive run.

Miller was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored while Rupert and Prewitt had two hits each. Molly Meyer highlighted the UD attack, going 2-for-4 including a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the sixth.

Bumbaugh (4-14) was dazzling through the first four innings before slipping up late. The sophomore had eight punchouts in the complete game win.

Game two was a 1-1 tie until the Jaguars ripped off a 10-run rally in the bottom of the second to end any suspense. Senior Alicia Hayes connected for a three-run homer to make it 4-1 and Ettl, who led off the inning by being plunked, later drilled a two-run double inside the left field foul line. Hayes' homerun was her team-high 11th of the season. Rupert added a two-run single up the middle as IUPUI sent 14 batters to the dish in the rally.

The Jags refused to let up as Raker doubled to lead off the third and scored when Wilcox blasted her ninth homer of the season. In the fourth, Hayes capped a five RBI game with a sacrifice fly, scoring Perry from third. All nine IUPUI starters had at least one hit and a run scored in the victory.

Hayes and Raker were both 3-for-3 with two runs scored while Wilcox went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Freshman Nicole Natter was efficient in the win, allowing just a solo homerun to account for Dayton's scoring.

The wins were IUPUI's first non-conference wins since a win at Elon on Feb. 27. It also extended the Jaguars' home winning streak to five-in-a-row.

Before the game, the IUPUI Athletics Department celebrated National Student-Athlete Day by treating student-athletes to a Mexican buffet, provided by the IUPUI Office of Alumni Relations and prepared by John and Patty Raker. In addition, the men's cross country team was awarded the Jag Cup for this past season, based on a number of factors including community service participation and attendance at sporting events. In addition, Derek Craig of the men's soccer team and Emily Valencia of the women's swimming team were honored with the Jaguar Spirit Awards for accumulating the most Jag Cup points of any student-athletes.

The next IUPUI softball game is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28 when the Jaguars trek to Morehead State for a doubleheader, beginning at 3:00 p.m..
