ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IUPUI softball team got another solid pitching performance from sophomore
Samantha Bumbaugh and four RBI from junior
Amy Raker as it split a doubleheader at Oakland University on Friday evening. The Jaguars won game one 6-1 before the hosts rebounded for a 3-1 win in game two.
In the opener, Bumbaugh (1-9) tossed a complete game three-hitter and both Raker and
Laura Wilcox drove in three runs in the victory. IUPUI (7-23, 4-7 Summit) jumped out early on the Grizz as Raker drilled a two-run single off OU's Brittany Doyle in the first inning, staking Bumbaugh to an early lead.
The only blemish on the sophomore righty's performance came in the bottom half of the first when she gave us a two-out solo homerun to Katie Dreyer, making it 2-1.
IUPUI added insurances in the third when
Kelsey Rupert and
Leah Prewitt led off with back-to-back singles and later scored when Raker drilled a sacrifice fly and Wilcox followed with a single to the gap in right-center. Leading 4-1, Wilcox later plated two unearned runs in the seventh inning, scoring Rupert and pinch runner
Kristine Grohnke.
Wilcox and Rupert both went 2-for-4 in the opener with the latter scoring twice. Bumbaugh fanned a career-high 10 batters against no walks and faced just four batters above the minimum in the win. Doyle (8-10) walked two and struck out one in defeat.
In game two, it was OU that did early damage, scoring all three runs in the first two innings against rookie left-hander
Nicole Natter. In the bottom of the first the hosts scored a pair of unearned runs, keyed by Dani Dulberg's two-out run scoring single. In the second, the Grizz manufactured a run as Audrey Sabourin led off with a single and raced around to third on Ashley Sullivan's sacrifice bunt. Anne Cicchini followed with a run scoring ground out to second, making it 3-0.
IUPUI barely threatened against Oakland's Marisa Everitt (3-6) until its final at-bat in the top of the seventh inning. Senior
Mia Ettl led off by being hit by a pitch and moved to second when Wilcox grounded out to the pitcher. Raker came through with a solid single to right, scoring Ettl from second, but Everitt ended the rally by getting
Alicia Hayes to go down on strikes.
Everitt scattered just three singles and struck out eight in the victory. Natter (2-8) allowed three runs (one earned) before handing the ball over to Bumbaugh one out deep in the second inning. Bumbaugh continued her brilliant pitching, keeping OU scoreless over the final 4.2 innings and striking out three.
Ettl was 1-for-2 and reached base twice in the nightcap.
The same two teams will conclude the series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
