BROOKINGS, S.D. - Senior
Laura Wilcox went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and sophomore
Samantha Bumbaugh kept South Dakota State's offense at bay as the IUPUI softball team salvaged game three of a Summit League series, winning 8-3 on Sunday. The Jaguars scored eight unanswered runs beginning in the fourth inning to claim the series finale.
IUPUI (11-32, 8-10 Summit) fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, but finally took the lead for good in the top of the fourth. Junior
Amy Raker reached with a one-out single and advanced to third when Wilcox doubled to right-center. Junior
Chelsie Hale tied the game with a single back up the middle and
Mia Ettl loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch.
Bumbaugh plated the go-ahead run when she drew a free pass and freshman
Kelsey Rupert made it 3-1 with an opposite field single. The inning ended when
Alicia Hayes bounced into a fielder's choice back to the pitcher.
Hayes atoned in the top of the sixth when she drilled a two-run, two-out single, plating Bumbaugh and Rupert to make it 5-1. In the seventh, IUPUI added additional insurance, keyed by
Joy Perry's two-run double inside the leftfield foul line, upping the score to 8-1.
SDSU (14-27, 6-6) scored two runs off Bumbaugh in the seventh, but freshman
Nicole Natter got a ground out and strikeout to bring IUPUI's four-game losing skid to a halt.
Hayes, Raker and Perry had two hits each and Wilcox scored two runs to accompany her three hits.
Bumbaugh (3-14) allowed three runs and recorded three strikeouts in the win. SDSU's Kori Seidlitz took the loss and was unable to escape the fourth inning.
IUPUI will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to South Bend to take on Notre Dame in a single game. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m..
