CHARLESTON, Ill. - Playing its second doubleheader in as many nights, the IUPUI softball team gave a solid showing but fell twice at Eastern Illinois on Tuesday night. The host Panthers needed extra innings to win the opener 4-3 before capping the sweep with a 5-1 win in game two.
IUPUI (4-18) senior
Laura Wilcox clubbed a two-run homer in game one and sophomore
Joy Perry had two hits in the second game.
After falling behind 1-0 in the opener, the Jaguars rebounded in the top of the second inning after
Leah Prewitt drilled a leadoff double and later scored on
Chelsie Hale's two out single to right. The come-from-behind trend continued when EIU (10-11) scored twice in the bottom of the third, only to see the Jags score two in their next at-bat.
Prewitt drew a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth and pinch runner
Kristine Grohnke scored when Wilcox pounded a homerun over the centerfield fence. Both EIU's Amber May and IUPUI's
Samantha Bumbaugh settled down from there with each tossing four straight scoreless innings.
The Panthers got the game-winner against Bumbaugh in the bottom of the eighth though when Melise Brown singled home Andi Morgan, who pinch ran for Kiley Holtz who led off with a double. Holtz and Brown combined for all four of EIU's runs batted in and leadoff batter Denee' Menzione was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Bumbaugh (0-6) got the loss out of the bullpen, allowing just one run in over five innings of relief work. May (5-7) allowed just four hits in the complete game win and struck out eight.
In game two, EIU scored four runs in its first three at-bats and coasted from there in the 5-1 win. Holtz was 3-for-3 with two homers and four RBI in the win.
IUPUI's only scratch came in the top of the fifth when Perry led off with her first double of the season and later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Mia Ettl.
Bumbaugh (0-7) took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) in three innings before handing the ball over to
Amy Raker. Raker gave up just one tally in three innings out of the bullpen for the Jaguars.
EIU's Natalie Wunderlich (4-3) got the win, scattering six hits over seven innings and striking out two.
IUPUI will return to action on Friday when it opens a three-game Summit League series against North Dakota State, beginning at 4:00 p.m.. Live stats will be available via IUPUIJags.com at the beginning of each contest.
