Box Score
ELON, N.C. - Elon sophomore Erin O'Shea tossed a complete game shutout and drove in four runs at the dish as the host Phoenix coasted past IUPUI, 9-0 in five innings on Sunday. Elon claimed the series win after the same two teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
Things began ominously for the Jags as Elon (8-1) banged home four runs in the first inning against freshman lefty
Nicole Natter (0-1). O'Shea had a two-run single to start the scoring and Danielle Lafferty later connected for a two-run safety, ending Natter's day.
Fellow freshman
Jocelyn Oppenhuis held Elon at bay until the bottom of the fourth when a run crossed on Tomeka Watson's RBI double.
IUPUI (3-5) threatened in nearly every frame, stranding seven runners in its five at-bats, despite collecting just three hits. In the top of the first, a pair of walks helped the Jags put runners on the corners with two outs, but junior
Amy Raker skied to center to end the threat. In the fifth, senior
Mia Ettl led off with a single and took second on
Kelsey Rupert's sacrifice bunt. Ettl was able to advance to third on a passed ball, but was left stranded after O'Shea induced a line out and strikeout to end it.
O'Shea (3-0) struck out four and walked three in the win. She was one of four Elon players to collect two hits while she and Lafferty both drove in four.
The Jags will next take the field when they host Western Illinois in a three-game Summit League set, beginning on Saturday, March 13 at noon.
