Game #1 - IUPUI 6, APSU 1
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The IUPUI softball team exacted some revenge on Sunday by knocking off Austin Peay at the Play It Again Sports APSU Classic, 6-1. APSU had defeated IUPUI by a 7-0 count on Friday.
Despite falling down 1-0 in the top of the first inning, IUPUI (2-3) responded with three runs in both the bottom of the second and third frames. In the second, freshman
Alicia Garrison led off with an infield single and junior
Amy Raker followed with a free pass. Junior
Chelsie Hale followed by drilling a three-run shot to left, marking her first career longball in over 80 at-bats.
In the third, IUPUI took advantage of some sloppy Lady Gov play to plate three more runs. Garrison had the key hit when she singled to left with the bases loaded, scoring two unearned runs. She later came home on a balk, making it 6-1.
That proved to be plenty of backing for freshman
Jocelyn Oppenhuis (1-1), who struck out six in 5.2 innings before handing the ball over to Raker with two outs in the sixth. The junior came in with runners on first and second, but immediately got Catie Cozart to bounce back to the circle to kill the threat.
In the seventh, APSU (1-4) loaded the bases, but a timely double play kept them off the scoreboard. Shelby Norton lined a ball to
Kristine Grohnke at second, who was then able to double up a runner that had strayed too far from first base.
IUPUI strung together its second win in as many days, despite being outhit 7-4 by the hosts. Garrison provided two of the Jags' four hits in the win.
The Jags will return to action next weekend when it heads to Elon for a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 p.m..
