KETTERING, Ohio - Junior
Michael Davan earned his first ever tournament at the Division I level by capturing the Dayton Flyer Invitational with a three-over 145 (71-74) at the par-71, 7,055-yard NCR South Course in Kettering, Ohio. He joins teammate
Ben Engle as individual tournament winners this fall.
Davan helped IUPUI to a final round 297 and a second-place finish at the 13-team event. Evansville won the tournament at 591, three shots in front of the Jaguars.
"One of the keys we talk about is always giving our best effort and giving our all," IUPUI Assistant Coach
Colby Huffman said. "We didn't beat ourselves. There's no quit in this team.
"This capped a good fall to look back on. We had two individual wins and four top three finishes as a team. It was a great fall to build on for this spring."
Davan didn't learn of the tournament title until the final scores were posted. The junior tied for the field lead with eight birdies over the two days and edged three others by a single shot for the victory.
"I had some good opportunities down the stretch, but I didn't fully capitalize on them," Davan said. "I knew if I stayed patient, some good things would happen. The greens were really, really pure so I made sure that I was putting with a confident stroke.
"This was a good way to end the fall though."
Davan was joined in the top 10 by senior
Ben Moster, who tied for seventh at 148 (74-74). Freshman
Juan Diego Plasencia just missed a top 10 finish by closing at 149 (74-75) and tying for 11th among the 85-player field. He was one of two players to notch an eagle during the 36-hole tournament.
Junior
Michael Powell capped the scoring four at 153 (79-74) and senior
Ben Engle finished his tournament at 154 (78-76). Freshman
Jose Pablo Segurola also finished at 154 (78-76) while playing as an individual.
Engle finished the fall with a team-best 72.5 stroke average and four top 10 finishes in his six entries. Five different Jags earned at least one top 10 finish in the season's first six tournaments, boding well for the spring.
"We've still got to work on a little bit of everything," Huffman said. "We need to work on our course management and getting our minds better overall. We can play a little more confident and have a little more poise and work on keeping that confidence in tournaments.
"It's just a matter of trusting the training and transferring that confidence to the course."
