SOFTBALL TEAM SUFFERS 7-0 LOSS AT WESTERN ILLINOIS IN SERIES FINALE

MACOMB, Ill. - The IUPUI softball team dropped the third and final game of its three-game set at Western Illinois on Wednesday, falling 3-0 at McKee Stadium in Macomb, Ill.. For the second straight day, WIU starter Kamren Ferguson tossed a one-hit shutout at the Jaguars, fanning 11 on Wednesday.

Offensively, WIU (28-17, 18-2 Summit) outfielder Ashley Campbell went 3-for-3 with two RBI in the victory.

The Westerwinds jumped out 2-0 in the bottom of the first against IUPUI (3-50, 1-23) starter Amy Raker, getting run scoring doubles from Lauren Furgala and Campbell. Meanwhile, Ferguson set down the first nine Jaguars in order before Jessica Huey led off the top of the fourth by reaching on an error.

By then, IUPUI trailed 4-0.

Freshman Lauren Popov broke up the no-hit bid in the top of the fifth when she drilled a one-out double, marking just her second extra-base hit of the season.

Ferguson faced just three batters over the minimum as another baserunner reached in the sixth on an error.

Raker (1-20) punched out two and walked two in defeat. The sophomore righty allowed eight hits and seven runs (five earned) in the the complete game.

IUPUI will wrap up its 2009 slate on Saturday when it hosts Purdue at the IUPUI Softball Complex. The doubleheader is slated to start at 4:00 p.m., which differs from the original schedule due to the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon. Live stats will be available at IUPUIJags.com.
