MACOMB, Ill. - The IUPUI softball team gave Summit League leader Western Illinois a run for its money, but came up short in both ends of a Tuesday night doubleheader at McKee Stadium. WIU's Kamren Ferguson tossed a one-hit shutout in game one in a 8-0 six inning victory and the Westerwinds rallied for a 3-2 walkoff win in game two.
WIU (27-17, 17-2 Summit) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in game one and watched Ferguson work a masterful game from there. The WIU starter whiffed six batters and walked just two, improving to 16-7 on the season.
Her toughest inning was the top of the first when
Amanda Mackey drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a
Mia Ettl sacrifice bunt. Sophomore
Amy Raker followed with an infield single, putting runners on the corners. However, Raker was cut down trying to steal second as the Jaguars tried to swipe an early run.
WIU pushed its lead to 4-0 against IUPUI freshman
Samantha Bumbaugh in the fifth and pushed home four runs in the sixth to end the game.
Julie DePolo went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the hosts and both Jamie Goss and Lauren Furgala drove home two runs each.
Bumbaugh (1-17) fanned three in the complete game loss.
In the second game, junior
Laura Wilcox staked IUPUI to a 1-0 lead when she blasted her sixth homer of the season with two outs off Lori Pankratz. WIU tied the game in the fourth when Ashley Campbell blasted a solo homerun of her own and the hosts took a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
Pankratz reached on a one-out double and later scored an unearned run on a throwing error.
WIU returned the favor in the top of the sixth though, allowing IUPUI (3-49, 1-22) to score an unearned run. Ettl, the reigning Summit League Player of the Week, led off the inning with her team-high 11th double of the year and took third on Raker's ground out. After
Alicia Hayes grounded out, Wilcox hit a ball back to the pitcher Campbell, who mishandled the play, allowing Ettl to score.
Yet WIU strung together two hits and a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh to hand Raker (1-19) the loss and make Campbell (6-2).
Raker yielded seven hits and three runs (two earned) in defeat and Campbell gave up one run in two innings out of the bullpen. Pankratz fanned six over the first five innings before handing the ball over to start the sixth.
Pankratz was the only player to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The two teams will conclude the three-game set on Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. first pitch. Live stats and pay-per-view live video will be available via IUPUIJags.com.
