INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI softball team rallied from a four run deficit, but saw visiting UMKC tally five times in the top of the seventh to claim a 9-4 win on Saturday, completing a three-game series sweep. Amanda Evans tagged a grand slam in the inning to cap the scoring.
Trailing 4-0, IUPUI (3-47, 1-20 Summit) hung a four spot on the 'Roos off reliever Taya Upkes to tie the game. After a ground out,
Jessica Huey was plunked on the hand to set the table for
Mia Ettl, who hit a towering two-run homer over the left field fence. Her homer hit high off the light post set well behind the fence, marking her 12th tater of the season.
Sophomore
Amy Raker got a new rally going, reaching on an infield single and moved to second when
Alicia Hayes drew a walk. Freshman
Leah Prewitt moved up both runners with a swinging bunt, setting the table for senior
Cassie Harvey.
Harvey fell behind in the count 1-2, but laced a ground ball single through the right side, scoring both runners. Hayes slid home, just ahead of Megan Vicino's peg from right.
UMKC quickly fired back though, getting a game-winning single to right from Carli Slagle, scoring Betsy Hanley from second. The 'Roos proceeded to load the bases with a hit and an error, setting the table for Evans. The UMKC catcher hit a towering fly to center that carried beyond the fence, thanks to a strong tailwind blowing straight out.
Raker (1-18) yielded the long ball and took the loss, working three innings in relief. She fanned two and allowed six hits. Freshman
Samantha Bumbaugh allowed one run in three innings before being lifted one batter in to the fourth. Fellow rookie
Lauren Popov worked the fourth, giving up three runs (two earned) and five hits.
UMKC (19-30, 9-12) senior Samantha Hurst was dominating for the second straight day, tossing four scoreless innings while fanning six. Upkes (4-2) blew the save, but got the win by striking out three and walking three over the final three innings.
Ettl, Raker and
Cassie Harvey had two hits each for the Jaguars. Every UMKC starter had at least one hit as the 'Roos banged out 13 safeties. Danielle Bennefeld was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the 'Roos.
IUPUI returns to action on Tuesday when it heads to Macomb, Ill. to begin a three-game Summit League set with Western Illinois.
