Game #2 Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI softball team's doldrums continued on Friday night as visiting UMKC came into the Softball Complex and swept a Summit League doubleheader, 6-0 and 10-4. In the opener, UMKC senior Samantha Hurst stymied the Jaguars' bats, tossing a four-hit shutout. In game two, IUPUI committed six defensive errors leading to eight unearned runs as Nicholle Ellis claimed the victory.
IUPUI threatened from the outset in the opener as speedy rookie
Sarah Oppelt drew a leadoff walk and immediately swiped second. Sophomore
Stacy Harte followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving the runner to third with one out. However, Hurst got a strikeout and fly out from
Mia Ettl and
Amy Raker to strand Oppelt.
IUPUI (3-46, 1-19 Summit) starter
Samantha Bumbaugh got off to a blistering start, fanning four batters during the first two innings, before UMKC (18-30, 8-12) finally got going in the third. In that frame, Betsy Hanley lined a two-out single to center to plate a pair of runs after a lengthy battle with Bumbaugh. The Kangaroos continued playing add-on from there, scoring a single run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Chelsea Hartwig added a mammoth solo homerun in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Offensively, Oppelt was on base in two of her three plate appearances and stole her 19th and 20th bases of the season. Hanley was 2-for-3 with three RBI for the 'Roos and Kelly Fischer went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in front of her.
Hurst (7-14) struck out 12 and walked just two in the shutout while Bumbaugh (1-16) tied her season-high with five punchouts. She yielded six runs (four earned) and 10 hits in defeat.
Game two began on a high note as Raker tossed a scoreless top of the first and the offense jumped out 2-0 on Ellis. Freshman
Jessica Huey worked a one-out walk and Ettl blasted the first pitch offered over the rightfield fence for her 11th longball of the year.
Unfortunately, the defense went awry in the top of the second, allowing UMKC to score six unearned runs. The Jaguars committed four errors in the inning, all of which occurred after two were out. The 'Roos made the extra outs sting, banging out five hits including an RBI double from Kalene Curry just inside the leftfield foul line.
UMKC pushed the lead to 10-2 before the IUPUI offense struck again in the sixth. Four consecutive hard hit balls led to two runs, starting with Raker blasting a solo homer to straightaway centerfield.
Chelsie Hale and
Alicia Hayes followed with doubles to left, scoring another run. Junior
Laura Wilcox followed with a solid single to left and moved to second on the throw to the plate, but Ellis buckled down from there.
A ground ball and back-to-back strikeouts stranded the two IUPUI runners in scoring position, holding the score at 10-4.
Ellis (6-8) struck out five and walked two in the complete game victory as Raker (1-17) fanned six in defeat. The sophomore gave up 10 runs (two earned) and walked one.
Ettl and Raker had two hits each while Oppelt went 0-for-3 to snap her team-high 10-game hitting streak.
The same two teams will conclude the three-game series on Saturday with a noon first pitch. IUPUI will honors its senior class of
Cassie Harvey,
Cayleigh Harvey and
Amanda Mackey prior to that contest. Live stats will be available on IUPUIJags.com.
