CEDAR CITY, Utah - IUPUI took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning of its series finale at Southern Utah on Saturday afternoon, but saw the Thunderbirds score three times in its final at-bat to swipe a 5-4 victory. Darleen Fernandez blasted a walk-off two-run homer, her 13th of the season, off freshman
Samantha Bumbaugh to end the contest.
IUPUI (3-42, 1-17 Summit) led the entire game before SUU's seventh inning rally.
With two outs in the top of the first, junior
Mia Ettl drew a walk and raced home on
Amy Raker's ninth double of the season to give the Jaguars an early 1-0 lead. The lead grew to 3-0 in the top of the third with all of the damage coming with two outs.
Raker started the rally with her first career triple to the opposite field and came home on
Laura Wilcox's single to right-center. Freshman
Leah Prewitt followed with a double to right, allowing Wilcox to score from first.
Southern Utah (18-26, 9-9) scored two unearned runs in the bottom half against Bumbaugh, but the freshman hurler rebounded by blanking the T-Birds in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
IUPUI loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but was only able to push home one run. The T-Birds cut down the lead runner at home when Ettl hit a fielder's choice to second base and Raker followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2, but Wilcox fanned to end the frame.
The top of the T-Birds lineup immediately put the heat on Bumbaugh in the seventh as Jenavieve Purcell doubled and moved to third on a ground out. Aly Daniels followed with a run scoring single, setting the table for Fernandez's game-winning drive. The trio of Purcell, Daniels and Fernandez combined to notch six of Southern Utah's nine hits.
On the other side, Raker was 2-for-3 with two RBI from the cleanup spot.
Bumbaugh (1-14) struck out four and walked four in the loss while allowing five runs (three earned). Kristina Brooks (17-21) won her third game of the series, recording six punchouts on Saturday.
IUPUI returns to action on Tuesday when it heads to Dayton for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
