FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- With a Summit League Tournament berth on the line in their final match of the conference season, the IUPUI men's tennis team fell just short against IPFW, falling 4-2 at the Swinney Park Tennis Courts Saturday afternoon.

IUPUI (3-16, 2-4 Summit) and IPFW (8-16, 3-3 Summit) entered the day's match with identical 2-3 Summit League records and were tied for fourth place in the conference standings. 

Playing the Mastodons on their home court, it was the Jaguars who struck first, dominating doubles action to move ahead, 1-0.  The freshman duo of Daniel Klingenberg and Bren Vasalakis struck first with an 8-5 win at No. 1 singles.  Taylor Tunis and Jorge Yunes gave the Jags the early victory, defeating Felipe Gama and Luis Maselli, 8-4.  For good measure, Gregory Sosa and Jesus Diaz were leading their match at No. 3, 5-4, when the match was suspended.

However, IPFW rallied in the singles portion of play, picking up their first point at No. 5 singles when  Ryan Vogt downed Yunes, 6-2, 6-3.  Sosa was the next to fall, dropping his match at No. 1 to Hermann Kuschke, 3-6, 2-6.

The final three completed matches were taught affairs, as Tunis was extended to three sets before falling.  The freshman won his first set against Rodrigo Tamashiro, 6-4, but lost the second in a tiebreak, 6-7(5).  In the decisive third set, Tamashiro broke Tunis and went on to win the set, 6-3.

Klingenberg looked to stem the tide, as he picked up IUPUI's second point with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win at No. 2.  However, Maselli defeated Vasalakis, 7-6(3), 6-1, to clinch the match for IPFW.

IPFW will be the host of The Summit League Tournament April 25-26, while IUPUI ends the season with a 4-16 overall record.
