CARROLLTON, Ga. - The IUPUI softball team's five-game trip to the West Georgia Invitational ended with back-to-back losses to Augusta State and Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday. The Jaguars dropped an 8-7 decision to Augusta State before falling to No. 17 Alabama-Huntsville 8-1.
ASU improved to 13-9 on the year and UAH climbed to 10-0 with the victory. The Jags fell to 1-15 in the season's first month.
No details were immediately available from the ASU loss.
In game two, IUPUI struck first with a run in the top of the third, but the Chargers scored eight times off two Jaguar hurlers in the fifth to account for the rest of the game's scoring. In the third,
Jessica Huey laced a one-out double and later scrambled home on
Mia Ettl's single to right. The inning ended when Ettl was gunned down at the plate, trying to score from second on a
Cayleigh Harvey.
In the fifth, UAH needed just three hits to push home eight runs, taking advantage of a fielding error and some IUPUI wildness. Kelli Long struck the big blow, drilling a two-run double to center to give the Chargers the lead.
Lauren Popov suffered the loss, allowing all eight runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings work. The rookie fanned four and walked three before handing the ball over to fellow freshman
Samantha Bumbaugh in the fifth.
Bumbaugh gave us one hit in 1.1 innings work.
Junior
Laura Wilcox went 2-for-4 from the cleanup spot in the IUPUI batting order.
The Jaguars are back in action on Saturday, March 14 when they take on Oakland in its home opener. First pitch is slated for noon.
