JAGS DROP THREE ON OPENING DAY OF WEST GEORGIA INVITATIONAL

IUPUI drops to 1-13 on 2009 season

3/7/2009 1:21:42 AM

CARROLLTON, Ga. - While the weather was nice, the opposition was unkind to the Jaguars as IUPUI dropped a trio of softball games at the West Georgia Invitational on Friday. The Jaguars opened with a 4-3 loss to North Alabama and followed that with a 10-2 six-inning loss to West Alabama.

The day concluded with a 6-5 defeat to host West Georgia.

"We're competing, we just need to pull it all together," Head Coach Maggie Calcaterra said. "We're keeping our heads up and still have 42 games left to play.

"I'd say we're definitely looking forward to tomorrow."

IUPUI rapped out 24 hits in the three games, but struggled to get timely knocks with runners on base. In the opener, IUPUI fell behind 4-0 and came up  short despite a late rally. The Jaguars made it 4-2 on back-to-back RBI singles from Leah Prewitt and Cassie Harvey, but left two aboard in the sixth inning.

In the seventh, IUPUI loaded the bases with one out and made it a 4-3 game on Harvey's two-out bases loaded infield single, but Megan Niesel got a bases loaded strikeout to seal the win.

Freshman Samantha Bumbaugh (0-2) took the loss in a complete game effort.

In game two, West Alabama used a seven run sixth inning to cruise to a 10-2 victory after overcoming an early 1-0 deficit.

The finale of the day saw IUPUI jump on top 4-0, thanks largely to a three-run homer from junior Mia Ettl. The Jags still held a 5-4 lead thanks to an Amy Raker solo homer, but West Georgia scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win.

Lauren Popov, Cayleigh Harvey and Ettl all had two hits from the bottom three spots in the batting order in the loss. Speedy freshman Sarah Oppelt went 1-for-2 and swiped three bags from the leadoff spot.

IUPUI (1-13) will conclude play with a pair of games on Saturday.
