FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IUPUI softball team dropped a pair of Summit League contests at IPFW on Friday afternoon, falling 7-2 and 5-0 in the twinbill. The Jaguars' offense never got on track as Head Coach
Maggie Calcaterra's team recorded just six hits in the two games.
In game one, IUPUI (3-28, 1-7 Summit) fell behind 2-0 through three innings before finally getting on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Freshman
Sarah Oppelt started the rally by reaching on an error and swiping her 12th bag of the season. Junior
Alicia Hayes moved the lead runner to third with a single and
Stacy Harte followed with a sacrifice fly for her sixth RBI of the season.
IPFW (9-10, 4-3) made it 4-1 in the bottom half against
Amy Raker, but IUPUI continued to chip away by scoring again in the top of the fifth.
Laura Wilcox and
Cassie Harvey led off with back-to-back singles and
Cayleigh Harvey advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Wilcox later scored on a dropped fly ball off the bat of
Mia Ettl to make it 4-2.
However, three IUPUI errors helped lead to three IPFW runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game's scoring. Rachel Staschuk was 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Mastodons and Beatrice Pedraza drove home two.
Raker (1-11) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) in a complete game effort. The sophomore struck out three and walked four in six innings. Courtney Cronin (5-2) whiffed two and scattered four hits in the victory.
In game two, Staschuk (3-4) tossed a two-hit shutout and blasted a solo homerun as the 'Dons claimed a 5-0 victory.
IUPUI's best threat of the game came in the second inning when Hayes led off with a double, but was left stranded as the IPFW starter got a ground out, fly out and pop out to keep the game tied at 0-0.
IPFW scored twice in the second and three times in the third to account for the game two scoring.
Freshman
Samantha Bumbaugh (1-8) didn't make it out of the third in defeat as the rookie struck out two and walked one. Fellow freshman
Lauren Popov yielded two hits and a run in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen.
The same two teams will conclude the three-game set on Saturday with first pitch slated for noon.
