INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI softball team saw visiting South Dakota State bang out 20 hits and get two strong pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep at the IUPUI Softball Complex on a chilly Friday evening. The Jackrabbits claimed game one 3-0 before winning the nightcap 6-2.
In the opener, South Dakota State (5-20, 2-0 Summit) used a pair of homers and a complete game shutout from Jenna Marston on its way to a 3-0 win over the Jaguars. SDSU jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the second inning against
Samantha Bumbaugh when Stacey Evans lofted her second homerun of the season over the centerfield fence.
The guests added insurance in the top of the sixth inning when Kelsey Lunn lined her first tater of the year over the leftfield fence.
IUPUI (2-23, 1-4) put its leadoff batter on base in each of the first five innings, but never solved Marston (2-12), who tossed a four-hit shutout.
In the opening inning,
Mia Ettl and
Sarah Oppelt opened with back-to-back singles, but the duo was left stranded on second and third on a ground out and strikeout. In all, IUPUI left seven runners on base as Marston walked two and fanned six in the victory.
Bumbaugh (1-7) struck out three and walked three in defeat.
In game two, IUPUI grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Oppelt reached on a one-out single and stole second one batter later.
Amy Raker followed with a run scoring single to center to give the hosts the early lead.
After SDSU tied the game at 1-1, IUPUI recaptured the advantage in the third as Ettl and Oppelt set the table with back-to-back singles. After
Stacy Harte advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, Raker followed with a solid single to left. Ettl scored easily from third, but Oppelt stumbled between third and home and was caught in a rundown for a key second out. SDSU starter Chelsey Evans escaped further damage by getting
Leah Prewitt to pop out in foul territory.
The lead remained until a three-run fifth which was fueled by an error, leading to three unearned runs.
The Jacks added two more runs in the seventh inning when Dani Broshar drilled a two-run homer to cap her 2-for-4 game that included three RBI.
Ettl was 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot in the IUPUI batting order while Raker went 2-for-3 with both IUPUI RBI.
Raker (0-7) was saddled with the loss in the circle, striking out four in a complete game effort. Evans (1-3) struck out six and walked two.
The same two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon from the IUPUI Softball Complex. Live stats will be available via IUPUIJags.com.
