INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI softball team's woes continued on Wednesday as the Jaguars dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Eastern Illinois at the IUPUI Softball Complex, 9-0 and 8-4. Game two was shortened to five innings as rain and lightning in the Indianapolis-area caused a 45-minute delay before the game was called.

In game one, EIU smacked four homers and got a three-hit shutout from starter Amber May (10-6) on its way to an easy 9-0 five inning victory. Denee' Menzione went 2-for-3 with two homers and four RBI for the victors.

Menzione drilled a two-out, two-run homer off Samantha Bumbaugh in the first inning before the floodgates opened up in the top of the second. The bottom two hitters of the batting order, Melinda Jackson and Jennifer Saucier, hit back-to-back solo shots in the second to make it 4-0. Ashley Anderton later connected for a two-run double off the centerfield fence to make it 7-0 just two innings in.

IUPUI got back-to-back two-out singles off May in the bottom of the second, but Cassie Harvey and Leah Prewitt were left stranded when Cayleigh Harvey bounced out to end the inning. Otherwise, the IUPUI offense never really threatened.

EIU added two runs in the fourth on Menzione's second long ball of the game, making it 9-0.

May struck out four and walked one in the win. Bumbaugh (1-6) worked just 1.2 innings, walking three and fanning one. She allowed seven runs (four earned) before handing the ball over to Amy Raker in the second. Raker yielded two runs and three hits over the final 3.1 innings while striking out four.

Game two started off on a positive note as Mia Ettl led off the bottom of the first with her team-high fourth homerun of the season over the centerfield fence.

The lead was short lived though as EIU (14-10) took advantage of numerous defensive miscues to score twice in the second inning, a solo run in the third and five times in the fourth. Seven of the eight runs were unearned as IUPUI made six errors in the middle three innings.

The IUPUI (2-21) bats finally came alive in the bottom of the fifth against EIU starter Kathleen Jacoby.

Cayleigh Harvey started it off with a solid single and moved up to second on Amanda Mackey's flare to left. Ettl was plunked to load the bases for the heart of the batting order.

Bumbaugh responded with a two-run single to center - her first hit of the season in three at-bats - to make it 8-3. Later, Raker hit a sacrifice fly down the rightfield line, scoring Sarah Oppelt from third. Laura Wilcox and Alicia Hayes came up with back-to-back hits to load the bases, but Jacoby got Chelsie Hale to fly out to straight away left to leave the bases loaded.

Both teams scored twice in the sixth inning, but the incomplete frame was washed out when the rain and lightning came, making the final score 8-4.

Jacoby (3-4) struck out two and walked one in the win while Raker (0-6) was the tough luck loser, allowing eight runs (one earned) and nine hits in the complete game.

Menzione completed her big day, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Ettl was 1-for-2 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot in the Jaguars' batting order.

IUPUI's 12-game homestand continues when the Jaguars open a three-game Summit League series against South Dakota State on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. from the IUPUI Softball Complex. Live stats will be available at IUPUIJags.com.
