INDIANAPOLIS - For 13 innings, Oakland pitching held the IUPUI softball team's offense scoreless on Saturday. However, junior Mia Ettl helped the Jaguars salvage a doubleheader split by blasting a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning in the nightcap to send the Jags to a 2-1 victory. The win snapped IUPUI's 10-game losing streak and also made a winner of freshman Samantha Bumbaugh in the circle.

Oakland (7-14, 1-1 Summit) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning against Bumbaugh, capped by Katie Dreyer's pinch-hit RBI single to right. On the play, Ettl bobbled the ball before throwing late to the plate as Erica Lozon slid home just ahead of the throw.

However, the lefty atoned for the mistake in the bottom half to cap a 2-for-3 game at the dish.

"I just wanted to get a base hit. We had to score to win anyways," Ettl said. "She threw it in my zone - down the middle and a little low."

The inning started when Stacy Harte bounced a single up the middle and was lifted for pinch-runner Sarah Oppelt. OU Head Coach Glenn MacDonald called on Brittany Doyle (0-4) from the bullpen, who retired Cayleigh Harvey on a sacrifice bunt before allowing Ettl's blast.

Bumbaugh (1-3) struck out four and walked just one in the complete game victory. OU starter Alison Tansel pitched six strong innings, allowing five hits and two walks in a no-decision. IUPUI leftfielder Laura Wilcox helped keep the shutout intact in the sixth inning, cutting down a runner at the plate to end the inning.

Leah DiCristofaro went 3-for-3 with a double for the Grizz.

In the opener, Kylie Schalz cracked a two-run homer in the top of the second to give OU an early 2-0 lead and the Golden Grizzlies coasted to a 6-0 victory. The visitors proceeded to tack on an unearned run in the frame when Anne Cicchini raced home from second on a throwing error after she had reached on a two-out single.

IUPUI best scoring chance came in the bottom of the sixth when the Jaguars loaded the bases with one out against starter Jessica Granger. The inning started when Wilcox beat out an infield single and then Amy Raker followed by reaching on a throwing error. After a strikeout, Harte battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a free pass.

However, IUPUI was unable to come up with the key hit.

Junior Amy McCoy took a called third strike across the letters after a lengthy battle with Granger. The OU hurler then fanned Jessica Huey to end the threat.

The Golden Grizzlies took the momentum into the top of the seventh where they tacked on three insurance runs against Lauren Popov, who fell to 0-4 on the season. Julie Owen dumped an RBI single inside the leftfield foul line to make it 4-0. Angela Righetti later provided an RBI single and the final run came home on a ground out to second.

Wilcox was 2-for-3 with a double for the Jaguars while Alyssa Deacon had two doubles for the guests. Granger (4-6) struck out 10 in the complete game shutout while Popov whiffed four and walked two.

With the series tied at 1-1, the same two teams will conclude the three-game set on Sunday, beginning at noon from the IUPUI Softball Complex.
