LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Playing in temperatures in the thirties and windchills in the twenties, the IUPUI softball team struggled offensively on the opening day of the Louisville Red & Black Tournament at Ulmer Stadium. The Jaguars dropped their morning opener to Miami (Ohio) 7-3 before falling in a five inning decision to host Louisville, 8-0.

Sophomore Amy Raker banged out three hits on the day to pace the IUPUI offense.

In game one, the Jags fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second, but used some two-out lightning to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. Raker drilled a single and moved up to second on an error fielding the ball in the outfield. Rookie Jessica Huey followed with a double to center to trade places with pinch runner Amanda Mackey, tying the game at one.

In the top of the fifth, Raker worked out of a bases loaded jam and the Jaguars took the momentum to the bat rack in the bottom half. Junior Amy McCoy started the rally by reaching on an error and Mia Ettl followed by bashing her first career homerun over the right field fence.

Unfortunately, two defensive errors opened the doors for six unearned runs in the sixth inning, all of which scored with two outs. Meghan Mawn provided a key two-run double that broke a 3-3 tie that helped propel Miami (5-6) to the win.

Jordan McElroy was 3-for-4 for the Redhawks while both Raker and Sarah Oppelt had two hits for IUPUI. Raker (0-4) took the loss, allowing six runs and five hits in relief of Lauren Popov. Popov yielded a run and four hits in four innings work.

Jessica Simpson (3-4) got the win in relief, striking out three batters in 2.2 innings work.

In game two, Tori Collins and Kristen Wadwell combined to toss a four-hit shutout as No. 21 Louisville rolled past the Jaguars, 8-0. The Cards jumped on top 3-0 in the second inning against Jessica McGown, fueled by Kassie Stanfill's triple to center.

UofL (14-2) played add-on in the fourth, thanks largely to a two-run single by Melissa Roth.

IUPUI (1-10) squandered a leadoff double in the second inning and put two aboard in the third when Chelsie Hale doubled and moved to third on a Stacy Harte single. However, Collins induced an Ettl ground out to end the threat.

McGown (1-4) took the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings work.

IUPUI returns to action tomorrow when it plays Miami (Ohio) again at 11:00 a.m..
