SOFTBALL TEAM TO BRAVE THE ELEMENTS AT UL RED & BLACK TOURNAMENT

Jaguars to take on both Miami (Ohio) and No. 21 Louisville over the weekend

2/27/2009 12:41:33 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The IUPUI Softball team returns to action this weekend when it takes part in the Louisville Red & Black Tournament at Ulmer Stadium. The Jaguars will play both Miami (Ohio) and No. 21 Louisville on Saturday before wrapping up with a rematch with Miami (Ohio) on Sunday. Temperatures are forecast to be in the 40's over the weekend.

IUPUI (1-8) has never played faced Miami on the diamond and is 1-1 all-time against Louisville as the two schools split a doubleheader on Apr. 25, 2000.

Offensively, the Jaguars have been paced by freshman Sarah Oppelt and senior Cayleigh Harvey in the opening month of the season. Oppelt is batting .389 (7-for-18) with four runs scored while Harvey is riding a team-high five-game hitting streak and batting .316 through eight games.

Sister Cassie Harvey is batting .294 on the young season.

Pitching has been problematic in the first two tournaments as Jessica McGown owns the staff's lone victory of the season. McGown tossed a complete game six-hitter against UNC-Greensboro at the Georgia Softball Classic, earning a 6-1 win.

First pitch against the Redhawks is slated for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a 1:00 p.m. start against Louisville. Sunday's game is also started to slate at 11:00 a.m..
