BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the first 10 minutes of their game versus Indiana, the IUPUI women's basketball team's game plan worked to perfection. The Jaguars were forcing the Hoosiers into turnovers and knocking down jumpers. Unfortunately, turnovers came back to bit the Jags as IU cruised to a 75-52 win over IUPUI at Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon.
Kerah Nelson had a career-high 21 points, winning a showdown with her old high school opponent, Indiana's Sasha Chaplin.
IUPUI (0-2) jumped out to an early 9-2 lead after hitting three three-pointers to start the game;
Gretchen Gaskin nailed a three on a pick-and-pop on the Jags' first possession of the contest to give IUPUI some early momentum. Nelson then drained a long ball from the wing and
Farren Stackhouse hit on the next possession off a
Jessica Huffman feed to give IUPUI their largest lead of the game at 7.
Indiana (2-0) methodically worked their way back throughout the half, capitalizing on 14 Jaguar turnovers, converting them into 18 points; the Hoosiers went to the free throw line 12 times over the final 13 minutes of the half, draining 9 freebies to slowly reel in the Jaguars.
"Turnovers were one of our points of emphasis before the game," head coach
Shann Hart said. "We preached it before the game, but we didn't handle the ball well and it cost us. Nearly a third of their points came off our own mistakes, and we can't win that way."
IU dominated on the glass to fuel their comeback and limit the Jaguars' possessions in the final 12 minutes of the first half as well. Eight offensive rebounds led to 11 second-chance points for the Hoosiers.
For the game, IU outrebounded IUPUI, 43-31.
Once the Hoosiers caught IUPUI at the 9:52 mark of the first half, the Jaguars went cold from the floor, connecting on just 2-of-7 shots from the field, as IU went on a 23-5 run to close the half and take a 36-18 lead into the locker room.
The second half saw a more relaxed Jaguar team, as they went toe-to-toe with the Hoosiers, largely on Nelson's back. The freshman was 4-for-6 in the half, working both inside and out as she finished 6-of-9 from the field with two three-pointers. After scoring 7 points in the opening 20 minutes of play, Nelson had 14 points in 15 minutes in the second half.
"I'd played against [Sasha Chaplin] back home [in St. Petersburg, Fla.], and I wanted to come out here and perform well. I'd seen Assembly Hall growing up on TV and it was nice personally to have a good game here," Nelson said following the game.
The Jaguars will host Northern Illinois in their home opener on Thursday, Nov. 19. Tip-off from The Jungle is scheduled for 7 p.m., and Scott Taylor and Tully Bevilaqua will have the call of the game on IUPUIJags.com.
