SHREVEPORT, La. -- On a day in which storms swept through northwestern Louisiana, the IUPUI volleyball team thundered inside the Gold Dome, routing host Centenary, 3-0, on Friday night. The Jaguars hit .220 as a team to steadily pull away from the Ladies, 25-14, 25-17, 25-23.
IUPUI (16-9, 8-6 Summit) moved one step closer to clinching a Summit League tournament berth and won their fourth straight opening-weekend match in conference play.
Ashley Johnson led the Jaguars with 10 kills and hit .467 for the match, finishing with just three errors in 15 attack attempts.
Monica Suding had 8 kills as the Jags were able to run slides for Suding and Johnson throughout the night;
Kalyse Reimbold also had 8 kills on the night.
Danielle Goodnight assisted on 36 of the Jaguars' 42 kills, closing in on the IUPUI assists record.
In their 3-1 victory over Centenary (4-19, 0-12 Summit) earlier in the year, the Jaguars came out sluggish and allowed the Ladies to snatch the first set before IUPUI got their bearings and took the final three sets. On Friday, the Jags came into the Gold Dome as if their hair was on fire, racing out to a 15-5 lead, using kills from
Lindsey Weber, Suding, Reimbold, Goodnight and Johnson.
Centenary came within seven points on two occasions late in the set, but IUPUI continually held the Ladies at bay, cruising to the opening set win.
While the Jaguars trailed early in the second set, they snapped a 13-13 tie with a 4-0 run, as Weber started the surge on a feed from Goodnight. After a Centenary error,
Rachel Holmes found the hardwood off a set from Goodnight, forcing the Ladies into a timeout.
A Suding stuff put IUPUI up, 20-14, but Centenary rallied within three at 20-17 before the Jaguars slammed the door, responding with another run, this time closing out the with a 5-0 run.
Having played five tough sets at the Gold Dome in 2008, the Jaguars made sure to avoid a repeat, holding off the Ladies in the third set, 25-23. Midway through the set, a
Lauran Thompson kill and a block by Suding and Goodnight helped IUPUI snap an 11-11 tie and forced Centenary to burn their first timeout of the set. The Ladies were forced into taking their second timeout just five points later after Holmes and Thompson came up with service aces to help the Jags go up, 17-13.
The second timeout appeared to work for Centenary, as the Ladies rallied to knot the set at 18, causing IUPUI to take a timeout of their own along the way. Tied again at 19, it was Johnson who got the Jaguars back on track, coming up with kills on back-to-back points to give the Jags a 21-19 advantage.
A kill from Holmes and another from Johnson followed in succession, pushing IUPUI's lead to 23-19. Holmes' sixth kill of the match gave the Jaguars set point at 24-21; Centenary took two straight points before an attack error gave the match to IUPUI.
The Jaguars will be back in action and looking for their first sweep of a Summit League weekend since Sept. 18-19 when they head to Tulsa, Okla., for a match against Oral Roberts on Saturday. The match will start at 8 p.m. ET from the Cooper Aerobics Center.
