DAYTON, Ohio – The IU Indy volleyball team opened Horizon League play on the road Friday night as the Jaguars fell in straight sets (20-25, 22-25, 21-25) to the Wright State Raiders.
The Jaguars (6-7, 0-1 Horizon) pushed the Raiders in all three sets, keeping the score tight with 13 ties and two lead changes throughout the match. IU Indy hit .216 as a team, highlighted by several standout individual performances.
Freshman
Jillian Tippmann powered the attack with a team-high 12 kills, while
Maia Long added 10 kills on an efficient .333 hitting percentage.
Morgan Ostrowski was a force at the net, finishing with four blocks to go along with four kills and two service aces. Setter
Grace Purichia directed the offense with 31 assists and added eight digs, while
Ninah Miranda chipped in six kills and six digs. Defensively,
Laura Roeder and Long paced the back row with eight digs apiece.
Despite strong stretches—such as a five-point rally in the first set to pull within one at 15-16 and another late surge in the second set that tied the score at 20—all three frames ended with Wright State (7-5, 1-0 Horizon) pulling away late.
The Jaguars outblocked the Raiders 6-5 and matched their intensity at the net but couldn't finish it out. Wright State was led by Mya Ayro's 13 kills and Reilly Zegunis' .526 hitting performance.
IU Indy will look to bounce back against the Raiders tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 27 in the 2:00 PM rematch.
