MACOMB, Ill. -- The IUPUI swimming and diving teams opened their 2008-09 season Saturday afternoon, taking on Western Illinois in a dual meet at Brophy Hall. The men's team took home seven wins, but fell 163-128, while the women had four winners and lost, 176-112.
IUPUI received several promising performances, including a sweep of the women's diving events by newcomer
Chen Ni. Ni posted a 258.01 on the 1-meter board, setting a new school record in her first collegiate event. On the 3-meter board, Ni scored a 279.98, again posting a new school record.
Ni was trailed in both events by
Elizabeth Scott, the previous record-holder in both events. Scott took second on both platforms, helping IUPUI pick up crucial points.
Natalie Jarrett picked up her first collegiate victory as well, winning the 200 IM in 2:23.41.

Carrie Ford combined to win the 400 freestyle relay, touching the wall in 3:58.92.
On the men's side,
Michael Steurer,
Craig Noakes,
Tyler McGowan and
Steven Zoss opened the year with a win in the 200 medley relay, winning in 1:42.98.
Steurer and McGowan combined to go 1-2 in the 50 backstroke, with Steurer hitting the wall first in 26.27, while McGowan was close behind in 26.45. In the 200 back, Steurer and
Luke Towne went 1-2, with Steurer touching in 1:59.76 and Towne in 2:04.40.
The men continued their strong showing in the next event, with
Andrew Heideman picking up his first collegiate win in the 50 breaststroke. The Hoffman Estates, Ill.-native posted a time of 28.90 to take the event. Heideman and Noakes went 1-2 in the 200 breast, with Heideman swimming a 2:17.26 and Noakes a 2:18.97.
In the 200 butterfly, McGowan, the school record holder, took first place with a time of 1:59.52. The junior also won the 200 IM in 2:02.88.
The Jaguars will be back in the pool on Friday, October 10, when they host Eastern Illinois. The meet will begin at 4:30 p.m. from the IU Natatorium.
