GALESBURG, Ill. -- The IUPUI men's tennis team clinched a berth in The Summit League Men's Tennis Tournament for the second straight year, cruising to a 4-0 win over South Dakota State Sunday afternoon at the Lakeside Racquet Center.
IUPUI (5-15, 3-3 Summit) dropped just one of 11 completed sets to assure itself the fourth seed in the upcoming Summit League Tournament.
Senior
Gabriel Garcia was one of three Jaguars to win in straight sets, winning at No. 1, 6-1, 7-5.
Gregory Sosa followed up Garcia's victory with a mirrored, 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 2.
Needing two victories in the remaining four to take the match, #E.J. Dechow
and Jesus Diaz# left no margin for error, winning at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively. Dechow won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while Diaz was the only IUPUI player extended to three sets, holding on to win, 6-2, 6-7(8), 6-1.
In the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches, #Jorge Yunes
and Blake Powers# each led by a set when play was halted.
With the win, IUPUI will play No. 1-seeded Western Illinois on Friday, April 25. The tournament will be played on the campus of IPFW in Fort Wayne, Ind.
