Game 1 I
Game 2
RALSTON, Neb. - Having played the fewest games to date of any team in the nation, the IUPUI softball team's offensive slumber continued on Saturday as South Dakota State swept a Summit League doubleheader, 3-1 and 7-0 from the Jags. The two games were played in Ralston, Neb., a suburb of Omaha, due to frigid temperatures in South Dakota.
Game #1 - South Dakota State 3, IUPUI 1
In the opener of the three-game series, senior pitcher
Meaghan Raynes limited SDSU to just two hits, but the Jackrabbits were able to scratch out three runs to escape with a 3-1 win. The Jacks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit as Sam Heinzman led off the game with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Ashley Durazo plated Heinzman with a sacrifice fly to right.
With the score still 1-0, the Jaguars had a prime opportunity to break up the shutout in the top of the fifth inning. Seniors
Jenny Boyts and
Jenna Crockett led off the inning by drawing back-to-back walks, setting the table for the bottom third of the order. Junior
Cassie Harvey put both runners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, putting runners on second and third with one out. SDSU starter Jenna Marston came up with a critical out, striking out pinch hitter
Amy McCoy swinging for the second out.
Sophomore
Mia Ettl loaded the bases by drawing a walk, but Marston got
Cayleigh Harvey to ground out to second.
SDSU carried the momentum to the bat rack in the bottom of the fifth, pushing across two runs on just one hit. Stacey Evans and Stephanie Peters drew walks from Raynes before Heinzman doubled to left, plating both runners.
The Jags trimmed an unearned run off the lead in the top of the sixth when
Amanda Mackey led off with a single and later scored on a throwing error.
Marston (9-14) rebounded in the seventh to close out the win. The SDSU hurler struck out nine and walked three in the complete game victory. Raynes (1-4) allowed just two hits and fanned three in defeat.
Both Mackey and
Amy Raker went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Jags.
Game #2 - South Dakota State 7, IUPUI 0
Game two was all South Dakota State from the outset as the Jackrabbits built a 3-0 lead against IUPUI starter
Jessica McGown over the first two innings on the way to a 7-0 victory. Durazo went 4-for-4 for SDSU (10-17, 3-2 Summit) and drove in three runs from the cleanup slot in the batting order.
Durazo laced a bases loaded single in the first inning to make it 2-0 and Heinzman made it 3-0 with an RBI double in the second.
IUPUI (1-11, 0-5) stranded baserunners in each of its first three at bats and failed to get a runner past second base in defeat.
Kiley Schwedhelm made it 4-0 against
Lea Corcoran with a solo homerun to leadoff the fourth and the Jacks added three runs in the sixth against
Sierra VanDeKeere.
McGown (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs and six hits in two innings work. Corcoran was solid in relief, giving up just one run over three innings work.
Marston (10-14) worked all 14 innings in the circle on Friday, fanning seven and allowing five hits in game two.
Mackey and
Stacy Harte had two hits apiece for IUPUI.
The same two teams will conclude the three-game series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m..
