IUPUI’S WENGER VOTED FIRST TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN

6/12/2007 12:12:48 PM

INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI senior men’s golfer Justin Wenger has been voted to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA), on the at-large ballot. He becomes just the second IUPUI student-athlete to earn First Team All-America honors, joining former women’s basketball standout Tiffany Kyser, who was chosen in 2002-03.

Wenger was chosen Third Team Academic All-America as a junior and is a three-time Academic All-District selection. This year, he was the only Mid-Continent Conference student-athlete to earn first team honors, as well as the lone representative from the state of Indiana.

He accumulated a 4.0 grade point average while completing his undergrad in mechanical engineering. Last year, Wenger was named the Mid-Continent Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, the highest honor given to any student-athlete at the conference level.

He capped his collegiate playing career by earning IUPUI’s Mel Garland Distinguished Student-Athlete Award - the highest athletic honor given to a Jaguar student-athlete. He ranks fifth on the program’s all-time list in rounds played (86.5) and sixth in career scoring average (76.40).

Wenger owns the third-best single round (67) in IUPUI history and the sixth-best 36-hole tournament score (144) at IUPUI. He also posted the ninth-best single-season scoring average mark as a junior, when he posted a 75.57 for the year.

Not coincidentally, the Jaguars enjoyed much success with Wenger at the top of the lineup. He was a member of IUPUI’s 2005 NCAA Tournament team, while the Jaguars claimed six tournament titles during Wenger’s career.

The at-large ballot spans golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, skiing, swimming and wrestling. IPFW men’s volleyball player Colin Lundeen was named a Second Team Academic All-American.
