INDIANAPOLIS -- Needing a victory to cleanse the palate after a disappointing loss, the IUPUI women's basketball team did just that in a dominating 66-40 win over IU-Southeast Wednesday night at The Jungle.
Nicole James equaled her career best with 18 points, while
Jernisha Cann and
Julia Whitted each posted double-doubles.
IUPUI (2-1) shot just 37.3 percent on the night, but offset some of their woes with 20 second-chance points and 23 offensive rebounds. Cann and Whitted contributed 11 boards on the offensive end, each finishing with 14 points; Cann had 11 caroms, while Whitted grabbed 10.
The double-double was Cann's second consecutive and 34th in her career; for Whitted, it was her first of the season and 17th career double-double.
In a chilly Jungle, both teams got off to slow starts, as IUPUI led, 18-11, 12:14 into the first half. However, the Jags used a 12-2 run from there to open a 17-point lead with 3:23 left in the half. IUPUI used a pressing defense to force four IU-Southeast turnovers in the stretch, each of which led to Jaguar baskets.
On consecutive possessions, IUPUI steals led to breakaway layups, one each for Cann and James. For the night, the Jags had a season-best 15 steals and forced 20 Grenadier turnovers.
The Jaguars put the game out of reach early in the second half, holding IU-Southeast without a field goal for an 11-minute, 57-second span, helping IUPUI turn a 32-21 lead into a 53-27 advantage. Whitted did most of her damage in the second half, scoring 10 of her 14 points in the second frame as she used her height advantage inside to wear down smaller defenders.
James shone in the final 20 minutes of play, knocking down all five of her field-goal attempts; the Franklin Central H.S.-product grabbed 8 rebounds, 5 on the offensive glass, both of which were career highs.
Of the 11 Jaguars who appeared in the game, nine scored and seven had at least one steal.
Quanisha Turner had a new career high with 7 points off the bench.
For the game, the Jags outrebounded IU-Southeast (3-3), 49-26.
Whitney Duncan led IU-Southeast with 10 points.
The Jaguars will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 22, when they host defending Ivy League champion Cornell. Tip-off will be at 4:30 p.m. from The Jungle. Fans bringing a canned food product to the game can receive $3 off a ticket.
