Senior Nate Kaiser earns a fourth-place finish in the 10,000m event

5/9/2025 10:35:00 PM

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Senior Nate Kaiser registered a fourth-place finish in the 10,000m event and sophomore Luke Shappell earned a trip to the 1,500m finals as the IU Indianapolis men's track and field squad opened the 2025 #HLTF Outdoor Championships on Friday night (May 9). Kaiser ran a personal best time of 29:57.70 and became just the sixth runner in program history to go under 30 minutes in the event in his fourth-place finish.

Kaiser sat in fourth-place nearly wire-to-wire as the trio of Youngstown State's Hunter Christopher and Ryan Meadows and Northern Kentucky's Natnael Weldemichael all went under the previous Horizon League record time. Christopher charged hard over the final 400 meters to run away with a winning time of 29:27.97.

The Jaguars' other entrant, Mitchell Gits, clocked a time of 30:29.11 in a tenth-place finish.

Earlier in the evening, Shappell used a late kick to win his heat of the 1,500m event in a time of 3:52.30, punching a ticket to Sunday's finale. Freshman Riley Nixon just missed making the finals, placing fifth in his heat in a time of 3:57.00. Fellow freshman Zane Schorr ran a personal best time of 4:09.45 in his preliminary heat, placing ninth overall.

Saturday's running events will begin at 4:00 p.m., culminating with the 3,000m steeplechase at approximately 7:10 p.m.
