Sophomore Luke Shappell sets a new #HLTF Outdoor Championship record in the 1,500m event

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The IU Indianapolis men's track and field team continued to showcase its young talent on the final day of the 2025 #HLTF Outdoor Championships, keyed by efforts from Luke Shappell and Joey Ashman, among others on Sunday (May 11). The Jaguars finished sixth in the team standings with 41 points, despite competing in just six events.

Shappell ran a brilliant 1,500m race, taking the pack out from the opening gun and staying on the lead the opening two laps. After yielding the lead with just over 800m remaining, he reclaimed the front spot on the turn with 500m to play and matched every challengers move, crossing in a conference championship record time of 3:47.45, clearing his closest competition by a full second.

Less than an hour later, a group of four Jaguars competed in the finals of the 800m event, including Shappell. That race was a sprint from the opening gun as Youngstown State's Trenton Shutters blew out to a big lead, followed by Joey Ashman leading a second contingent. Ashman closed more than a second off Shutters' lead on the final lap, but was still a second shy in a runner-up effort, crossing at 1:51.22. Freshman Riley Nixon placed sixth at 1:53.57 and Nick Cook ran 1:55.56. A clearly heavy-legged Shappell was eighth in the finals at 1:57.29.

In the 5K, Nate Kaiser closed his collegiate career with a sixth-place finish, clocking a time of 14:42.90 on an unseasonably hot day. Kaiser led for much of the race and was positioned for the final stretch, but ultimately was outgunned over the final 800 meters. Freshman Joey LaPatra finished second in the slower heat and 13th overall in a time of 15:20.46 and Nixon doubled back with a time of 15:34.54. MItchell Gits capped his season with a time of 15:39.75 and Sam Grimes ran 16:46.40.

The Jaguars' 4x400 team of Nick Cook, Jay Pillai, Jaydon Steidinger and Ashman closed the meet with a sixth-place finish in a time of 3:20.88. Ashman's anchor helped the Jaguars overtake Detroit Mercy on the final stretch, ultimately keeping the Jags in sixth-place in the team standings with 41 points.

Earlier in the day, the 4x100 entry of Alec Hueftle, Carter Schorr, Nolan King and Grant Moon contributed a sixth-place finish and three key points to the team total.
